I was speaking with someone yesterday about risk management at big banks - we both agreed that there was no one who had any idea what a banks risk was a a given point in time due to the counterparty risk, credit risk, etc. I speculated that it was mostly dumb luck that they had some positions that did well when others did poorly but if correlations go to 1 they are screwed. He pretty much agreed..
